Lime Rickey International’s Future Faith is a conceptual operetta (composed, choreographed and performed by transdisciplinary artist Leyya Mona Tawil) made of 11 interwoven statements which are transmitted – via bilingual lyrics, animated choreographies, ‘future folk dances’, and a noise score generated by voice, microphones and effects – to a future nation, a homeland yet to exist. Tawil accumulates migration narratives and transmits them through Lime’s corporeal mythology.

Future Faith is the culmination of a multi-year investigation into Arab Experimentalism – a field that narrates regional and diasporic realities through transgressive art practices. Future Faith has been nominated for a NYC Bessie Award in Music 2019.

Pedestrian street, Yliopistonkatu

The Turku Future Folk Dance project creates a new folk dance for the future of Turku. Tawil works together with local people and communities creating a choreography that reflects the changing city, its habitants, communities and futures. The dance will also be rehearsed with Stretch participants and finally performed together with the audience at the New Performance Turku Festival.

Leyya Mona Tawil will create a new project, Turku Future Folk Dance, for the city of Turku. Tawil works around live art, contemporary dance and experimental music with her character Lime Rickey International. Lime Rickey International is the superconsciousness of Leyya Mona Tawil – a person from the future thrown into the contemporary world, performing future folk dances and songs from a homeland yet to exist.

The project is produced in collaboration with New Performance Turku Festival and STRETCH 2019 event.

Leyya Mona Tawil (Syria/Palestine/USA), also known as LIME RICKEY INTERNATIONAL, is an artist working with dance and music practices. Her work has been presented in 16 countries and throughout the States. Her approach to experimental performance is based on conceptual scoring and location-based variables. Tawil is the director of Arab.AMP – a platform for experimental music and performance from the Arab/SWANA diaspora. She is a cultural activist and leader in the Arab American live art scene.

Lime Rickey International’s Future Faith was commissioned and premiered by Abrons Arts Center, New York City and received significant support from the Saari Residence/KONE Foundation (Finland) and the East Bay Community Foundation (California). It is a production of DANCE ELIXIR 501c3, a US-based nonprofit organization supported in part by the California Arts Council, the City of Oakland Cultural Funding Program and the Kenneth Rainin Foundation.
