The ecological crisis has a strong affective and emotional dimension. In this performance lecture, we move through “Earth Emotions”. We shall discuss topics such as eco-anxiety and climate anxiety, the potential of the so-called “dark emotions” such as fear, anger, grief, and despair, the challenge of practicing radical joy and the role of arts in meaning-making amidst the crisis.
Dr. Panu Pihkala (b. 1979) is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki (HELSUS / Faculty of Theology). He is a leading Finnish expert in interdisciplinary research about “eco-anxiety”. Pihkala’s pioneering monograph on the subject was published in Finnish in 2017 and has raised much public discussion. Pihkala was awarded the National Prize for Adult Education (Sivistyspalkinto) in 2018 by The Finnish Lifelong Learning Foundation (Kansanvalistusseura).
Pihkala’s writings on environmental education deal also with art-based methods. He has participated actively in practical environmental work, especially environmental education, and has served as an expert in various positions of trust. In his workshops, Pihkala has co-operated with various artists.
